I came across this Rhamnus cathartica on the edge of a pedestrian walkway alongside a main road in Salford Quays, early April. The plant would appear to have been planted deliberately, as it requires maintenance in order to ensure it does not overwhelm the pedestrian passage way. This Buckthorn not only marks the boundary between public and private land, but it acts as a visual and sound barrier for those who occupy the land behind. The height range of 4-8m acting as the visual barrier, and the dense depth of approximately 2.5-4m acting as the sound barrier.
Furthermore, the red berries create a visual 'softness' to the otherwise overwhelming aesthetics of the shrub. These red berries also create further contrast to the thorns, while adding colour to the view.
